In this episode I suggest ideas for Christmas activities that don’t cost a thing for adults and children alike.
I share some Cornish Christmas traditions and how lights can bring joy at this time of year. Perhaps there’s a living advent calendar near you, or you can admire the best lit houses in your town. If the weather is a bit rubbish there’s still plenty of fun to be had indoors too.

Tom Bawcock’s Eve on 23rd December – This is a traditional celebration in Mousehole in Cornwall, which is best known from the children’s book The Mousehole Cat. The villagers put candles and lights in their windows to guide home the fishing boats. Tradition dictates that Stargazy Pie is eaten – a fish pie made from pilchards, potato and egg, where the heads and tails of the fish stick out of the pastry. For me, Christmas really starts on 23rd December when we have Stargazy Pie for dinner.
Going for a walk at dusk – on a cold clear day a walk at dusk can be really beautiful. If you are out just after it gets dark, don’t forget to have a look for the great conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter (a Christmas star).
Living Advent Calendars – Our village will be creating a living advent calendar by lighting up windows. Lots of places are doing this this year so have a look to see if there is one local to you. Or take a look at the Saltaire advent windows online as they have amazing windows every year.
Have a Christmas disco – make it fun and put on your favourite Christmas songs.
Have a film night – I love making popcorn and watching my all-time favourite The Muppets Christmas Carol.
Get outside – this time of year can end up with tensions running high and it’s especially hard this year when you can’t ask the family to take the kids for a little bit. But most of the time, getting a bit of space and fresh air can make a huge difference. In episode 3 I give some suggestions for how to make a bit of space to breathe and chill out before Christmas if you need some ideas.
